“Sandwich carers” under pressure to care for elderly parents and children
What is a "sandwich carer"?
“Sandwich carers” make up 1.25 million people in the UK and are individuals who care for both their children and an elderly relative.
Whilst many sandwich carers would not like to consider looking after an elderly loved one as ‘work’ in any way, the truth is that juggling children, a paid job and full-time care can be draining, both physically and emotionally.
Age UK Director Caroline Abrahams stated in regard to sandwich carers in the UK: “Given the intense pressure on them, it’s amazing that more don’t experience a break down, but there’s no doubt many are coping with much more than it is reasonable to expect.”
Furthermore, many elderly people have more complex care requirements than many self-made carers are able to meet in an effective way. Dementia and Parkinson’s disease can cause dramatic changes in mood and personality, which can prove upsetting and stressful for loved ones trying to help.
